6 Things Ultra Productive People Always Do
By Sandy Schroeder
Every group has at least one person who amazes everyone around them. They get everything done on time and they seldom work late hours. This happens everywhere in every industry. These productive “stars” make life look fantastically easy, and most of us would love to know how they do it.
Identifying Their Secrets
Jack Zenger and Joseph Folkman took a closer look at this phenomenon and published their findings in the Harvard Business Review. They collected data on more than 7,000 people who were evaluated by managers, employees and peers for over 40 different behaviors. Then Folkman and Zenger zeroed in on the ones who scored in the top 10 percent for productivity and pulled out seven different skills that these productive people regularly used.
They establish a pace - These incredibly productive workers figured out how to deliver a steady flow of work day after day, week after week, creating a rhythm that reinforced the flow of their work. If you think about it, a lot of time and creativity can be lost when a work pace moves back and forth. Compare that with someone who just keeps spinning along creating a steady flow of results. Which would you rather do?
They create "stretch" goals - Instead of bouncing around, they ruled out all distractions and focused on one goal to nail it. If you do this you may be amazed at how much you get done. If you make these "stretch" goals a habit you could be this productive every day,
They are prepared - If you do not have the technical skills or knowledge for a job, get it. Take classes, ask for help or train with people who know what they are doing. Productivity is so much easier when you are totally qualified.
They are competitive and driven - You can hear it in their voices and see it in their eyes. They came to play and they are totally motivated to achieve. Watch others work and you will spot this “push to win” quality that powers them ahead.
They know how to project and solve - People who produce the most can look ahead and spot roadblocks. They are also creative enough to come up with good solutions. Truly productive people never break stride because they have some good backup solutions in the pipeline.
They work well with others - The producers are often seen as “stars,” but they are also known as down-to-earth souls who reach out to everyone around them to get the job done. In today’s culture, the real achievers have to know how to work smoothly with everyone.
If these skills seem familiar, you may already be a star producer in your job. If some of the skills are ones that you need to use more, do it. All you have to gain is everything!
