Surviving Your Springtime Road Trip

By Donna Stark

Heading out on a road trip this spring? I bet your kids are getting excited. Maybe the grownups are getting a little excited too. And why not? Going away with those you love the most, seeking either relaxation or adventure (or maybe a bit of both), and leaving all of your responsibility at home sounds absolutely wonderful. But if you've experienced road trips before, you know that things can go sideways real fast, don't you? In fact, mixed in with all of that excitement and anticipation of what your destination has to offer, I'm sure we can find a small amount of apprehension as well. Why apprehension? Well, do I need to remind you that you are going to be in a car, with your kids, for hours on end?

Road Trip Tips

Planning ahead, preparing for the unexpected, and maintaining a healthy dose of patience can make the time you spend in the car seem like Christmas morning. A time filled with love, joy, cheer, peace, and happy feelings all around for everyone. You may be thinking that it's not possible, but I'm here to tell you it is! Take a look at these road trip tips that will help get you all to your destination with a smile on your face.

  • Make frequent stops - Sure, you would love it if you could just drive through without any stops to slow you down, but your kids? Well, they are in the back seat trying to determine who can hit the other the hardest. So for the safety and sanity of everyone in the car, make the stop, stretch your legs, and let your kids burn off some energy.
  • Bring technology - The key for a peaceful road trip is to make sure that your children avoid being bored to death, so give them plenty of distractions and let them have their technology. Of course, it would be wise to set some limits on it, so have them turn it off after the movie ends or put it away once a certain period of time is up.
  • Bring plenty of snacks - Honestly, it's all about survival here. If your road trip is going to be a long one, you have to pack plenty of snacks. Make sure they are healthy and easy to clean up though! There is nothing worse than to sit in a car that is sticky and smelly from spilled food. And on that note, don't forget the paper towels!

Expect the Unexpected

Having a patient and a carefree attitude during the car ride will help get you to your destination free of stress and full of love. And although there may be some unexpected circumstances that pop up on the road, if the car ride is good, you can bet the trip will be great!
