Planning for a Fun Run: 3 Tips to Follow

By Virginia Laird

As the holidays begin to close in, many across the nation begin to plan for holiday fun runs. These are no doubt extremely exciting for everyone who chooses to partake. This year, as you plan to take on your 5K, 10K, or half marathon, there are a few things you should do to help prepare you for a fun and successful time. Experts have provided tips that include:

  • Start preparing now
  • Take breaks as you run
  • Charge your devices
  • Start hydrating now

Start Preparing Now

It is never too soon to begin preparing for your race. Those who do not prepare may find themselves out of breath and out of shape on race day. Rather than being one who struggles to complete the entire race, be the one who is ready to go. This means it is time now to start hitting the track. It is necessary that you make time to run at least four times each week as you prepare for your big race. And experts say that you should avoid doing too much in the beginning. Instead, you should build up to the distance that is your goal. Starting light and easy is a great way to get your body ready for the big race.

Take Breaks as You Run

There is no shame in taking breaks as you run. Even those who run major marathons allow time to take a break to hydrate along their trail. This is imperative for you as well. As you prepare to run your holiday fun run, it is necessary that you take breaks as you go. Stretching and hydrating can be helpful in preventing cramps. As you train, make sure you plan for breaks.

Charge Your Devices

One thing that is imperative when you run is charging your devices. There is nothing worse than getting out on your long run and have the batteries die on headphones, a cell phone, or whatever device may be helpful for you. Make sure that you have fully charged devices before you hit the pavement.

Start Hydrating Now

Health and wellness experts say that hydration is key to running a successful race. This hydration does not begin on race day. Rather, it starts now. Being properly hydrated well in advance of your race can help prevent cramping and keep you on the right path. It is suggested that you consume at least half of your body weight in ounces of water daily. For those who find this a struggle it may be necessary to reach out for a sports drink or flavored water to help you maintain the hydration necessary.

Now is the time to start preparing for your holiday fun run to be sure that it will be a success.
