5 Things to Do When You're Feeling Down

By Brandi Goodman

Feelings of sadness and overwhelming stress can really have you down in the dumps. It can be difficult to break free if you aren't sure how to handle the situation. When you're feeling down or otherwise having a bad day, there are some things you can do to help break out of the funk and get your mood improved.

Head to the Beach

Sit by the ocean. Watch the waves crash against the shore. See the bright, blue sky overhead. Watch the birds fly past. The beach scene is incredibly calming and beautiful, providing a sense of peace and an understanding that there's more beauty to life than you may remember at times.

Take a Walk

The same sentiment applies when you take a walk through a forest or within trails at your local park or nature reserve. The leaves blowing in the wind, the sounds of birds chirping, and the peaceful nature of the place can help you feel more alive than ever. It provides a very calming atmosphere that helps you realize there's so much greatness to this world.

Volunteer

Helping others can actually help yourself as well. It can boost your confidence and self-esteem to know you're doing something good by helping others in need. Find volunteer opportunities where you can, whether it's at a pet shelter, in a soup kitchen, or even around the city helping to plant trees and flowers. You never know when an opportunity might arise to offer your time and assistance, so always be on the lookout.

Turn on Upbeat Tunes

Music has long been used as a means of self-expression. It can completely change your mood and help you feel better or worse -- depending on what's playing. Make sure to turn on upbeat tunes that put you in a better mood. Don't listen to the melancholy songs or anything angry, as this will only worsen your depressed state. Something that puts a smile on your face and makes you want to dance or sing along is best.

Drink Water

It may not seem like it would help, but some moods can be changed with water. If you find yourself feeling sluggish, crabby, or otherwise off, drink a cup of water and see how it makes you feel. Sometimes, our moods can be off because our body and brain need to get hydrated better. They may be lacking the water they need to thrive, which can alter your mood. Keep drinking plenty of it throughout the day to see how it benefits you.

Of course, none of these options are a fool-proof method for eliminating depression. They're simply helpful things to try to help improve your mood and get you feeling better in the moment. You should always reach out to others to express your feelings and even see a doctor if necessary. Your mental health matters greatly.
