Modifications for Life With Chronic Pain

By Donna Stark

There is no denying that living with chronic pain can be difficult both physically and emotionally. In fact, there are days when, in addition to being extremely frustrating, it can also be downright excruciating. Which is why it is important to have an incredible circle of support around you, such as family, friends, and coworkers who are always willing to pitch in. This support system can certainly make day-to-day life so much easier for you, can't it? But sometimes that's not enough. Sometimes, you may find yourself alone and unable to call on them. Sometimes, you may actually have to manage on your own.

Living With Chronic Pain

Living with chronic pain can certainly take its toll on your body, but it doesn't need to take away your ability to care for yourself or earn a living. By creating spaces that work with you instead of against you, you may be able to manage life a little bit easier. Here are some suggestions on how to do so.

  • Home - Place objects that you use every day within easy reach. This may mean that you will need to reorganize closets, cabinets, and shelves in most areas throughout your home. The key idea here is to make your daily activities easier and less stressful when you are alone. You may also want to consider purchasing furniture that supports self-sufficiency, such as motorized lift chairs.
  • Car - Do you drive a lot? Don't exacerbate your pain by sitting in your car for long periods of time. Make sure that your seat is in the proper position so that your feet can reach the pedals without strain, take advantage of the lumbar adjustments for increased comfort, and purchase a supportive seat cushion if your seat isn't providing exactly what you need.
  • Work - Ergonomic workstations have been around for years, but it's always good to double-check that yours is set up properly. The main things you want to look for are correct seat height, monitor position, and posture. Be sure that your feet are able to rest flat on the floor when sitting upright, that your computer monitor is at eye-level, that your keyboard is within reach, and that you are intentional about your posture.

Don't Let Pain Define Your Days

Although it's very important to know your body's limits, pain doesn't need to define your days. Find your support system to help you get through the tough moments and look for modifications that you can make to the larger aspects of your life. There are a lot of things you can do that will bring a fair amount of pain relief and simplification to your life, you just need to take the time to do so.
