Better Breakfast Month in September encourages people to think harder about the choices they're making in the morning. When it comes to food, you want to eat things that are nutritional for your body and will help to boost your energy. Get your day started right and experience an improved mood throughout the remainder of it with a better breakfast.

Importance of Breakfast

The body needs breakfast to get started after a period of rest. You've been sleeping and now need to eat something nutritious so your systems can kick into gear and start burning calories again. It also provides vitamins and nutrients that will give you energy to get up and going for the day. Skipping this morning meal may leave you feeling groggy, slow, and unmotivated. 

Better Breakfast Recipes to Try

Skip the McDonald's Drive-Thru and Starbucks line in the mornings and eat your breakfast at home. A glass of water and a nutritious meal is what you need rather than caffeine and sugary, unhealthy fast-food options. Making your own breakfast sandwich is one option. Use a whole wheat English muffin packed with egg whites, spinach, and avocado. 

Oatmeal can be a great option as long as you use the right kind. Instant oatmeal flavored with strawberries and cream (a popular choice) isn't sufficient. It has far too much sugar and will have you crashing within a few hours. Try steel cut oats that are better for your body and flavor it with fresh fruit or organic honey. 

You can try a breakfast smoothie if you want a meal on the go. Just be sure you get some protein in the mix so it helps you stay full for longer. Greek yogurt, a frozen banana, some water, a fruit, and a vegetable should all go into the smoothie for a truly nutritious start to your day.

A low-carb keto breakfast casserole is another good choice. Sausage, eggs, pine nuts, and cheese come together to give you a major protein boost. Add roasted red pepper for some color and vitamins and use a pesto sauce, reduced-sodium vegetable broth, sea salt, pepper, and basil to enhance the flavor.
