Lung Tips to Live By
By Brandi Goodman
Healthy lungs are not guaranteed. Lung health can deteriorate quickly if you aren't doing what you can to care for these important organs. With some lung tips to live by, you can better your breathing and improve your respiratory system while also maintaining your overall well-being.
Breathe Fresh Air Daily
Staying indoors and breathing in dust and chemicals day in and day out isn't ideal for lung health. You need to get outside and breathe in fresh air daily to really help your lungs thrive. Try to spend at least a half-hour outside each day getting the fresh air your lungs -- and the rest of you -- need.
Avoid Low Air Quality Days
Although it's wise to spend time outside, it depends on the time of day and what's going on at the time. Low air quality days are bound to occur from time to time. When the pollen is high or pollutants are in the air, you should avoid going outside until the air quality improves.
Improve Air Quality Inside
The indoor air quality of your home matters. If you've let your AC run for months without ever cleaning it, or have a furnace that's never been serviced, now is the time to change that. You need to have regular system cleanings so you can improve the air quality inside for better breathing.
Take Steps to Prevent Illness
Illness can wreak havoc on your lungs. If you so much as experience a cold, you may find it difficult to breathe at times, pain while coughing, and a heavy chest. You can take steps to prevent illness so your lungs are overworked. Wash your hands often. Avoid being around large crowds or close together with smaller ones. Practice good oral hygiene.
Add Aerobic Exercise to Your Daily To-Do List
Lifting weights works well for building muscle, but it won't do much for your lungs. You need aerobic exercise that really gets your heart beating and your lungs working in order for it to help improve breathing capacity. Add aerobic exercise, such as walking, jogging, or swimming, to your daily to-do list for improved health.
