How a Pet Can Improve Mental Wellness

By Genevieve Cunningham

Most kids already know this, and as adults we tend to forget. But the truth is that pets are really good for us. While they definitely require some responsibility, they bring a ton of benefits. And many of these benefits are long-lasting. Pets can be good for us in multiple ways, but one of the most significant impacts that they make on our health is through our mental well-being. If you would like to make a positive impact on your mental health in one of the best ways, take a look at why owning a pet may be a great idea.

Provides Friendship

A pet is a friend. We get to know them, and they get to know us. We provide each other with companionship. We offer each other love. Many people form a powerful bond with their pet and count on them as a friend. And this is great for overall mental health. We need friendships in order to keep our mental health in a good place. Get a pet that works with your personality in order to truly benefit from this aspect.

Gives Us Purpose

Pets help us find a little bit of purpose in life. And purpose is really good for long-term mental wellness. When we have a pet, we have to look out for their well-being. We have to feed them and give them water and provide shelter. We have to take care of their health and play with them. Purpose is a good thing to find in life, and it’s something that many people struggle with. Luckily, you can have many purposes in life, and taking care of an animal friend is a great place to start.

Makes Us Laugh

Pets do unexpected things, and this can bring a bit of joy and laughter into our lives. A puppy that chases its tail? Funny! A cat that falls off of the back of the couch? Funny! We need laughter, and pets can help provide this in spades. Don’t get a pet for the entertainment factor, but enjoy the silliness that often comes with a furry friend.

Pets are wonderful additions to life. Many of us become incredibly attached to our furry friends, and there’s nothing wrong with that. Pets can enhance your health -- both physical and mental. If you don’t have a pet, consider adoption. You may find that doing so improves two lives -- yours and theirs -- for a lifetime of happiness for everyone.
