Keep Healthy With These Fall Activities

By Paul Rothbart

Fall is a popular season with many people. Cooler weather may feel more comfortable. It's harvest season and there are many types of produce available. Several sports begin their seasons in the fall, there are state fairs, and then there are the holidays. So many fun activities from which to choose. You can take advantage of some of these to improve your health while enjoying yourself.

Take a Hike

Fall is an excellent time to go on a hike. You sweat less and can enjoy the beautiful foliage while trekking your favorite trails. Hiking burns calories, works your muscles, and is also good for your mental health. Getting out into nature is good for your body, mind, and soul. It's also a good way to see animals in their natural habitats. Some trails are historic and you can learn something new.

Toss the Football Around

The most popular fall sport is football. It's fun and great exercise. Get out in the fresh air and throw the pigskin around with a friend. Better still, gather a group and play a game of two-hand touch. Friendly competition is always a good time and you have so much fun, you don't realize what a workout you're getting.

Pick Apples

Head to a local orchard and pick your own apples. There's nothing like an apple fresh off the tree. There are usually multiple varieties to choose from. You get good exercise picking and carrying your apples around. When you are finished, you will have a supply of one of the healthiest fruits there is. Choose some tasty and healthy recipes for your new crop of apples.

Run a Road Race

Many communities have 5K or 10K races in the fall. This is a great way to get in shape as you will spend several weeks training. A run in the fall is fun and you may grab a trophy. Many races are for charity so you can also do something worthwhile for a good cause.

Make Chili

Fall is a good time to start making hot foods. Hot in spice as well as in temperature. You can try a healthy recipe packed with protein, tomatoes, beans, and some hot peppers. Invite some family and friends over to enjoy your healthy seasonal meal. Socializing is good for your mental health.

Check Out a Corn Maze

Corn mazes are fun in a group and a great way to get outdoors and get moving. You can compete in teams and see who can finish the fastest. Reward the winners with some healthy apple cider.

Fall is a fun time of year with many things to do. It's a good opportunity to boost your health while enjoying good times with family and friends.
