Nervous About Your First Chiropractic Visit? Don't Be

By Paul Rothbart

You've probably heard a lot about chiropractors. You may even have family or close friends who receive chiropractic care and report successful results. Achy back, joints, or other problems may plague you and you've decided to try seeing a chiropractor for yourself. No doubt, you're a little anxious and maybe very anxious. If you've never been to a chiropractor before, you're not sure what to expect. Will it hurt? Will it work? Seeing a chiropractor is generally no more painful than seeing a doctor. Read on for what you can expect on your first visit.

The Start of Your Visit

Your first appointment should take about an hour. Just as any other medical professional, your chiropractor will need to learn your medical history. You'll be asked the standard questions about any conditions you may have, medications you are taking, and past surgeries. Your chiropractor will also want to know about your lifestyle, diet, and exercise, and how well you sleep. You may be asked about alcohol or drug use. It's important to be honest. Finally, the chiropractor will want to know what kind of pain and physical problems you are having.

The Exam

Once you have filled out the forms and relayed your medical history, the chiropractor will examine you. You'll sit and lie down on an examination table while the chiropractor checks your spine and joints. They may be moved but it will be gentle. You may be asked to walk to see if you have any problems that show up in your stride. Based on the exam, the chiropractor will locate any subluxations or other issues you have that are causing you problems.

Once the chiropractor has discovered the problems, you can be treated. This takes place on the same table and involves adjustments made to the problems areas. The chiropractor may need to thrust with some pressure, but most people don't experience much if any pain. You may hear a popping sound. This is nothing to worry about. It's just gas escaping from joints. You might feel sore afterward, similar to how you feel after a hard workout. The soreness generally does not last long.

Post Treatment

When your treatment is finished, your chiropractor may suggest exercises to do at home that will help you heal. You may also get recommendations on diet. A follow-up visit will be scheduled and your chiropractor may suggest regular weekly treatments.

Seeing a chiropractor for the first time is a big step and it can be a little scary. There is nothing to worry about as chiropractors are highly trained medical professionals. Consider choosing The Joint Chiropractic. You don't need an appointment and can stop by anytime you need help. You may find that regular chiropractic care helps you stay fit and healthy.
