3 Ways to Lower Stress Every Morning

By Genevieve Cunningham

Stress. We all have it. We all hate it. We’re all looking for ways to get rid of it. Stress is an unfortunate part of life. Most of the time, we can’t escape all of the stressors that we’ll come across on a regular basis. And yet, maintaining lower stress levels is important for long-term health and wellness. So what are we to do? One approach that may be successful in keeping your stress levels manageable is to create some morning habits that are focused on lowering stress. This way, you start the day off on the right (calm!) foot. If you’re interested in beginning your day with less stress and better health, take a look at these tips for making it happen.

Meditate

It’s not as silly as it sounds. If you don’t already meditate, doing so can sound like a waste of time. But plenty of research has shown that regular meditation lowers stress levels, brings about better health, and improves the overall lives of millions. And even though it has a hippy new age vibe, it’s actually an ancient practice with deep roots. Wake up a simple 10 minutes earlier, find a quiet space, and sit in the silence for a few minutes. Though it will take work, meditation can really improve the way that you feel about yourself and life, and it can definitely lower the stress that you feel on a daily basis.

Go for a Walk

Most people don’t think about walking as soon as they wake up, but it actually has a lot of benefits. Walking is a great form of exercise. It works the muscles, burns calories, and improves overall body function. And if you take your walk outside, you’ll be giving your stress levels a double whammy. Exercise can reduce stress, and the great outdoors can reduce stress. By doing both first thing in the morning, you may be able to start the day off with almost no stress attached and with your workout out of the way for the day.

Skip Electronics

We all love our phones and laptops and various devices, but the harsh truth is that technology is stressful! If you can avoid it, don’t use technology first thing in the morning. Just leave the phone on the nightstand, don’t open the computer, and be present throughout the morning. This might be a challenge at first, but those who take on this approach often find their mornings -- and their entire days -- more calm and centered and less stressful.

Lowering stress is more important than many realize. We get so caught up in the day to day, it’s easy to forget just how important it is to stay calm and relaxed. But if you can keep stress at bay, it can improve everything about your health and life. Use these tips to lower your stress every morning, and you may find your life more enjoyable in the long run.
