Show Appreciation on Roof Over Your Head Day

By Brandi Swieter

National Roof Over Your Head Day may sound like a silly title, but the celebration is all about being appreciative. People should take this day to show their appreciation for the things they have. Being thankful for at least having a roof over your head is a start. Focusing on the positive in life rather than the negative is a great way to boost mood, making this day even more beneficial than one might think.

Boost Mood

When thinking of all the things a person actually has in life instead of focusing on those things they don't, it's an easy way to boost mood. Many people forget about all they've been blessed with when they're feeling down. They focus on the things they're missing out on, the friends they don't have, the gifts they can't afford, and more. The whole time is spent feeling sad and sorry for themselves. Individuals can turn their mood around fast by instead looking around and seeing the family that is there for them, the food on the table, or the items they do have that have offered comfort, entertainment, or joy.

Improve Your Mental Health

Maintaining one's mental health isn't always an easy feat. The job can be made easier, however, if people learn to show appreciation and remain in a better mood. Focusing on all the bad in life can make the mind feel stressed and burdened. Thinking about the good can help to improve mental health and relieve some of the stress off the shoulders.

Decrease Pain

Many people report feeling aches and pains when they're stressed or upset. Those who tend to show more gratitude and focus on the good in life do not experience as much pain on average. People who don't let stress get the best of them are better able to manage with daily life and do not feel as much tension in their bodies .

Roof Over Your Head Day shouldn't be the only time people focus on the good in their lives. Everyone should always be thankful for what they do have instead of worrying so much about the things they don't. Some things are out of our control, but choosing to be proud of accomplishments made to date and the family and friends in a person's corner is always possible. What's even better is that a little gratitude can provide a major attitude change. Overall health and well-being can be enhanced because of it.
