Working With Your Hands May Improve Focus
By Tom Herrin
With so many things today that distract people, they tend to stay busy most of the time. There is an abundance of electronic devices available. They are used in both work and entertainment. Many people, especially young people, become so attached to them that there are increasingly more times when they become detached from real social interaction. It is actually a little scary. The brains seem to become saturated with media. A little break from this kind of mental bombardment may provide some welcome opportunities for people to change their direction and gain some valuable experience in some other areas. Working with their hands may help with these things.
It Can Require A Different Kind Of Concentration
When people work with their hands to create things, referred to as crafting, they are often able to block out other mental distractions as they focus on the work they do with their hands. An ability to visualize where they are going with their project must be developed and is a natural consequence of this type of work. Considering the different phases of their creation as it develops is critical to success. Realizing the joy of this success can change an outlook entirely. Working to improve and complete a project can provide dedication and motivation.
It Can Have An Effect Similar To Meditation
There are many forms of activities that are intended to clear the mind and provide a sense of peace. As people become involved in crafting, they are able to put aside the normal stresses. Since there is a certain amount of intense concentration necessary, they may get lost in their work. This is not all bad because it provides relief from stress or depression. It can be a real change of pace.
You Don’t Have To Be An Expert
Unlike what you may believe about crafting, everyone who does it is not highly trained or apprenticed. You can find a large variety of things to become involved in as you work with your hands. There are activities both indoors and outdoors. There is knitting, painting, woodworking, restoring, and an almost endless list of things. Just drop by a craft store and spend some time browsing around. If you find something that interests you, give it a try. It is important to remember there are no great or insignificant endeavors. What fits one person may not at all fit another. The individuality is what counts.
