How to Get Better Sleep When You're Stressed
By Brandi Goodman
Stress and anxiety can eat at your mind, causing you to stay up at night worrying. Just one restless night is all it takes to make you more susceptible to further stress, irritability, and even illness. Continue the pattern of no sleep and you'll really be feeling out of sorts. Learn how to get better sleep even when you're stressed so you can experience improved rest -- and therefore health.
Stick to Your Sleep Schedule
Even if you're feeling stressed and don't think you'll sleep well, it's best to try and stick to your sleep schedule. Do everything you normally do before bedtime and lie down at the same time as usual. You should try and wake at your normal time as well so you don't end up sleeping in and messing up your routine and plans for the day.
Try Relaxation Strategies
If you're feeling particularly stressed, don't wait until your bedtime to do something about it. A while before it's time to hit the hay, try some relaxation strategies to help yourself ease your mind and body. Deep breathing techniques can help a lot. Meditation is another option many people utilize.
Count
The reason so many say to simply count sheep is because the practice works. Ensuring your mind is only focused on one thing -- the counting -- can help it to unwind and relax. It makes it easier to drift off. You don't actually have to count sheep. Simply count from one to 100 in your head, or less if it doesn't take you as long to feel at ease and ready to fall asleep.
Take a Hot Bath
Soaking in the bath before bed is great for relaxation and stress relief. You can even add bath salts or essential oils -- such as lavender -- to help promote a sense of calmness. Making a bath a part of your nightly routine can help you drift off faster at night.
Drink an Herbal Tea
Certain teas are meant to make you sleepy. Try an herbal tea used for this purpose -- such as chamomile -- and sip it slowly as you sit and relax for the evening. You can even pair it with a good book for even more relaxation.
Don't let your stress get the best of you. You need adequate sleep each night if you hope to maintain your well-being. Find ways to manage your stress and rest easier so you can wake each day feeling well-rested and ready for your to-do list.
