How Can I Exercise Indoors?
By Randi Morse
It's important that we stay active, and many people find going outside to work out heightens their enjoyment of whatever activity they are doing. But there are times when you can't get outside. Maybe the weather is horrible, maybe you are stuck inside because you are immunocompromised, or maybe you simply can't handle dealing with people today. It's important that you still get your exercise, and the good news is there are a number of things you can do inside your home to fulfill your exercise requirements.
The Stairs
My husband hates the fact that we have stairs in our house, but climbing stairs is an amazing way to get exercise. Simply walking up and down the stairs can burn around seven calories a minute. Jog up the stairs and you will increase that to about 11 calories a minute. There are plenty of ways you can motivate yourself to climb up and down the stairs. For example, don't skip the commercials on your favorite show, instead use that time to run up and down the stairs. Put all of your favorite snacks downstairs; this requires you to climb the stairs in order to get them. In our case, our washer and dryer is downstairs so in order to do laundry, which seems to be never-ending many days, we have to run up and down the stairs.
Use an App
Today you can find apps for almost anything, including exercising. Navigate to your favorite apps store and check out all the exercise apps they have available. You'll find that most of them are free, or offer a free trial. Download one of the apps and give it a try. If you don't like it, delete it and try another one. If you do like it, you've found a great way to exercise inside.
Play With Family
If you've got young family members, or you have young-at-heart family members, play some games inside. Blow up a balloon and try to prevent it from hitting the floor, or start a pillow fight in the middle of your living room. These may seem like silly things to do, but all of them get you up and moving and allow you to stay inside the house while you are getting your exercise. So don't be discouraged if you can't go outside, there are plenty of ways that you can get exercise while you're safe and cozy in your own home.
