Chiropractic Tip: Strength Training May Cut Neck Pain

By Sandy Schroeder

Many of us run into neck pain when we overuse muscles and ligaments as we hunch over keyboards and screens. Our heads move forward and our shoulders slump as the work day moves on.

HarvardHealth researchers have pointed out exercises to strengthen neck muscles may be one way to reduce chronic neck pain.

A Danish study worked with women who did repetitive work on computer keyboards in their jobs. In time, chronic pain called trapezius myalgia developed. This shows up as pain and tightness that runs down the back of the neck and spreads out toward the shoulders. The study focused on neck muscle strengthening exercises to relieve the pain.

Three groups were used in the study. One did neck muscle strengthening exercises. One did general fitness training and one only received health advice. The ones doing the neck muscle exercises had a 75 percent drop in pain which was maintained during a 10-week follow-up period without exercise. The other two groups experienced no appreciable pain relief.

The researchers said more research is needed to test these results, which indicated muscle-strengthening exercises may be a helpful strategy for chronic neck pain.

As always, if you are considering trying these exercises, get your doctor’s approval before beginning.
