Give Stress the Slip and Stay Strong

By Sandy Schroeder

In a chaotic world, it's easy to lose your balance, or just feel a little off-center much of the time. Family, finances, and health issues may all seem to be plotting against you as stress builds. When you reach the point of anger or deep anxiety, it's time to take action.

What to Do?

Doctors and scientists suggest some ways to lower stress and beef up the body's ability to fight off infections. Try these steps.

Be kind and nurture relationships - Reach out to friends and family members to create supportive connections. Listen when they need you and they will be there to listen to your concerns too.

Set aside a little time to be alone and quiet every day - Early morning or late in the day may be the perfect time to sit out on the patio and just feel the breeze, or watch the birds as your stress slips away.

Stay active and exercise every day - When stress just keeps building a brisk walk, bike ride, or run can do a lot to subdue your worries. Simple stretches or a strength routine can lift your spirits and quiet your mind.

Breathe deeply and meditate - Focus on each breath as you let your thoughts flow unchecked and unjudged. You could sit quietly on your patio, or move through a series of yoga poses on your mat, letting your mind and body move freely. Later you may feel less stressed as you think more clearly.

Eat healthy and sleep well - Defeat stress with fresh whole foods, and make sure you sleep 7 to 9 hours each night to let your body rest and recover from the day.

Air your complaints and listen too - When questions come up with co-workers, or friends and neighbors speak up, remember to listen with empathy. Avoid sarcasm or excuses; simply try to make your communications count.

Don't smoke and drink moderately - Stress can trigger binge drinking and smoking, leaving you more worn out and even more out of whack.

If stress persists seek help - Speak with your doctor, look for a therapist and see what professionals are available online or by phone.

Wherever your stress levels are, don't just accept them. Keep pushing the buttons to find the relief you need to enjoy every day.
