Refreshing and Healthy Alternatives to Soda
By Paul Rothbart
There's nothing like a cold, refreshing drink when it's hot. At the beach, in a park, even when working out, it feels good to quench your thirst. Soda is a common choice of beverage. The problem is, it has virtually zero nutrition and can do harm to your health. Truthfully, a sticky, sugary, drink isn't going to do that good of a job quenching your thirst. Water is the best way to hydrate but sometimes you want some flavor. Here are some healthy alternatives that will refresh.
Infused Water
There are flavored waters on the market but most contain a lot of sugar. It's better to make your own infused water. You can choose your favorite flavors and be sure there is no sugar or harmful substances in it. Slice up your favorite fruits and put them in a pitcher of water. Refrigerate and drink when you're thirsty. Citrus fruits and berries are very tasty. You can also use vegetables such as cucumbers. Using mint or other fresh herbs adds more flavor. Alternatively, you can freeze chopped fruit in ice cubes and use them in your water.
Iced Green Tea
Green tea is delicious and very good when iced. Having it without sugar means zero calories. If you like a little sweetness, add some honey. It's a healthier substitute for sugar. Green tea is incredibly healthy. Its antioxidant content helps prevent type 2 diabetes, heart and liver disease, and many forms of cancer.
Seltzer With Juice
One feature of soda that most people enjoy is the carbonation. Seltzer is fizzy, but if you want flavor, try adding fruit juice to it. One part juice to three parts seltzer makes a bubbly and tasty beverage. Use pure fruit juice to avoid added sugars. Squeezing lemons, limes, or oranges works well. Pomegranate and grape juice are delicious and loaded with antioxidants which makes them very healthy. Try different flavors and find your favorites.
Put Wine on Ice
If you're the type who likes a little rum in your cola, try drinking a glass of wine. Too much alcohol is not good for you, but in moderation, wine can be quite healthy. Like the grapes it is made from, it contains antioxidants and all the benefits they provide. Red wine is the healthiest and, when you can, chill it for a very refreshing beverage.
When it's hot and thirst calls, some type of beverage is needed. Soda is popular but very unhealthy. Try one or more of these alternatives for a refreshing, yet healthy drink.
