Swap This for That for a Healthier Life

By Brandi Goodman

Each day we all have many choices to make. The foods we'll eat and the activities we'll do are all up to us to decide. What we choose has a major impact on our health. Learn how to make some simple swaps for a healthier life and better well-being.

Swap Chips for Nuts

A craving for something salty doesn't have to go ignored. Just be sure you're not grabbing a bag of chips that are packed with sodium and loaded with calories. Swap your chip bag for a container of nuts instead. Nuts can satisfy your salty craving while offering protein and healthy fats. You still shouldn't go overboard on them, though. Just grab a handful and it should be enough to tide you over.

Swap an Elevator Ride for the Stairs

Taking the elevator may get you to the next floor quickly, but it won't do your body any good. You should swap your ride for some exercise up the stairs. Taking the stairs will have you burning calories and working your lower body. It can improve your leg strength.

Swap Bread and Noodles for Vegetables

Bread and noodles are two common side dishes at mealtime. Many people load up their plates with meat and a large scoop of pasta or a roll or two. Swap these out for vegetables and you'll cut down on your calories and carbs. If you do still want bread, be sure you're choosing whole wheat options instead of white. When you're making pasta, serve it as your main meal with chicken or fish in the dish instead of having both separately on your plate. You should still serve veggies with it for the nutrition you need.

Swap Sit-Ups for Planks

Too many people believe sit-ups are the best exercise they can do for abs. This exercise option can put unnecessary stress on your lower back. Planks are a better choice. You basically get into push-up position to do this move, but you don't lower yourself to the ground. Instead, you hold your body in place and keep your spine straight. This works your core while also strengthening your back and shoulders.

Work to improve your diet and exercise habits with some simple swaps. Change out one unhealthy habit for a more beneficial food or activity and you'll be on your way toward improved health in no time. Start with one change at a time so you don't overwhelm yourself.
