3 Reasons to Wash Your Hands More Often

By Genevieve Cunningham

We are taught the habit of handwashing at a very young age. We're taught to wash our hands after we go to the bathroom, before we eat, and any time that they are exceptionally dirty. While we know this is a good habit, many of us seem to forget its importance as we get older. Without someone constantly reminding us, we tend to skip the handwashing more often than we should. But as it turns out, this childhood habit is extremely important to our overall well-being. If you haven't been washing your hands frequently, take a look at these three good reasons to wash your hands much more often.

It's Almost Flu Season

Though you should really be practicing this habit all year long, now is a great time to pick it up. Why? Because it's just the beginning of flu season. The flu is miserable. It causes body aches, high fevers, congestion, headaches, and can even cause serious reactions in some people. While there are things that we can do to prevent the flu, one of the most effective is to simply avoid the germ. Frequently washing your hands helps remove the germ from your body before it's allowed to penetrate through the nose or mouth. If you have a hard time remembering to wash your hands, make it a part of your flu prevention plan, and it may become a habit that finally sticks.

Germs Are Everywhere

Even if you're not worried about the flu, the fact remains that germs are everywhere. And a lot of times, they're on surfaces that we touch all day long. Door knobs, purse straps, counter tops, and similar items can be absolutely riddled with germs. And since we constantly touch these items, it's also important to constantly remove them. Try to get into a habit of washing your hands three or four times a day without cause and you may be able to prevent some of these germs from invading your body.

To Protect Others

Don't forget that washing your hands is not only about you. Sometimes we need to eliminate germs in order to protect others. If you happen to be the carrier of a particular germ, it helps if you wash your hands before or after you sneeze, cough, or touch particular items. Certain populations such as the elderly or infants, are at a much higher risk when sick. By making hand washing a regular habit, we can help to protect these more vulnerable members of our society.

You don't have to be completely obsessive about washing your hands. You don't have to wash every time you enter a new room. You don't have to wash every time you shake a hand or meet a new person. But it can be extremely beneficial to make it a habit that you do throughout the day. With good habits, you can keep yourself and others healthy and strong through this time of year and the rest of the year as well.
