Relieving Stress With Yoga
By Brandi Swieter
Stress has a way of creeping into people’s lives without warning, leaving many feeling defeated, tense, sore, and just about sick of dealing with daily life. Rather than giving in, finding ways to cope with stress is the best answer. It will help to alleviate some of the symptoms associated with it and help people get back to a more relaxed state. Yoga is one coping technique that anyone can try.
Shavasana
Shavasana, or the corpse pose, is one of the most relaxing choices in yoga. It is typically performed at the very end of the yoga session in an effort to fully relax the mind and body and leave people feeling stress-free. If someone only has a few minutes to spare, however, then this is the pose to try. Lay flat with the legs and arms both spread apart. The palms should be facing up. Keep the eyes closed and simply take a few minutes to stay in the pose and decompress.
Janu Sirsasana
Janu Sirsasana, or the head-to-knee pose, is simple to do. Sit on the floor with the legs extended in front. Bend forward and place the head as close to the legs as possible, Get a good stretch by reaching the hands to the feet and holding them in position. This pose stretches the back and helps clear the mind as people are focusing on the stretch and not on the stress.
Vajrasana
Vajrasana, or the "thunderbolt" pose, is completed in a kneeling position. People start on their knees and lean back toward their heels. The spine should be kept straight during this pose. What offers true stress relief about this option is when people incorporate deep breathing exercises. Focus on breathing deeply and inhaling and exhaling to release troubles from the mind.
Try out some yoga poses and feel the stress melt away. Sure, the actual problems may still be there to deal with, but finding ways to cope with problems ensure people don’t get so easily frustrated while trying to manage.
