6 Moving Methods That Prevent Pain

By Brandi Goodman

Moving from one location to another can take a toll on the body if you aren't careful. It's important to use caution when tackling your move and employ certain moving methods that will prevent pain. Six such methods are described.

Purge Prior to the Move

Most people know they're going to move before they have to. This gives you time to start purging unnecessary belongings prior to the day and getting rid of extra stuff that doesn't need to be hauled. It saves you some work and lightens the load.

Start an Abdominal Workout

The abs are going to be doing a lot of work while you're moving. All of the bending, twisting, and maintaining your balance as you try to walk with boxes in your arms will require ab strength. At least six weeks before you move you should start doing daily ab workouts that will help you build up your strength. You'll target your back as well, which can help to prevent pain when moving day arrives.

Stretch Before You Start

On the day of the move, be sure you stretch well. Your body needs to be stretched if it's going to handle the vigorous workload ahead. It will help to prevent injury since it keeps your joints flexible.

Stay Hydrated

Staying hydrated is another way to keep the joints flexible and prevent injury. Make sure you're drinking water before the scheduled move, during the process, and after you've finished to keep your body fully hydrated and able to recover easier.

Wear a Brace

There are back braces, knee braces, and other options that can help to keep your body more stable while you move. It keeps you from getting injured during the process and ensures you're following proper protocols. Bending over at the waist, for example, is harder to accomplish with a tight brace around you. You're not supposed to bend like this, and should instead bend at the knees so you're not overexerting your back.

Pack Properly

The packing process is just as important as moving. You want to be sure you're not spending tons of time hunched over boxes trying to go through papers and items as you sort them into their appropriate places. It is also wise not to overload each box. Keep light items in bigger boxes so you're not making anything be too heavy to manage.

Make moving day a little easier by trying these methods. You don't want to be left feeling sore and struggling to get up and around after you've accomplished your move. Keep the pain away and make the most of your time by utilizing these options.
