Is Sugar Your Weakness?

By Tom Herrin

As members of the human family, we all have weaknesses.  For a lot of us, it is something sweet.  Reaching for that sweet treat too often can get us into plenty of trouble.  It is almost an addiction for some of us.  What makes matters worse is the amount of foods and drinks available almost everywhere.  It is often too easy to reach for one of these treats that is full of sugar.  On the other hand, there are lots of foods and drinks around that contain some kind of alternative to real sugar.  Making a decision to consume more of these may make building a healthy diet a lot simpler.

Sugar Substitutes Have a Place

The effort to produce a suitable artificial sweetener has gone on for quite some time.  The first successful one was made available in the late nineteenth century.  For some people, it became an opportunity to live a much more normal lifestyle.  Diabetics were left out for years as they struggled to manage their health.  After the development of a usable substance to replace insulin, sugar substitutes had one of the greatest impacts on their overall health.  With such progress, they are now able to consume almost any kinds of foods or drinks without fear of suffering a serious health problem.

Dieters Should Exercise Caution

Many individuals seem to feel that artificial sweeteners can play a major role in their diet plans.  It is true that there are many of these sweeteners available now that have a better taste than ever.  As such, many people try to use them to support their efforts to lose weight.  It may be good, but some studies have indicated that drinks with these sweeteners may increase hunger.  The result has been weight gain instead of loss.  I have known many people who drink diet drinks often yet seem considerably obese.

Manage Sugar

Even though it may have a questionable reputation, sugar is not all bad.  There are only about 15 calories in a teaspoon of it.  If we will limit our indulgence of sugar, there is nor reason for us to rely on substitutes, unless we are diabetic.  With some good practices and careful planning for those occasional sweet treats, we can enjoy them.  Then we may use some of those artificial sweeteners for our regular drinks.
