Coconut Water: Is It Worth It?
By Genevieve Cunningham
Everyone knows that you’re supposed to drink a lot of water. In fact, if you can stand it, it's best if water is your main drink of choice. Of course, it doesn't always work out this way. Why? It's usually because of flavor. Water tastes like … nothing, and we're a society that is spoiled on excessive flavor. Luckily, there may be a compromise. If you need to hydrate but can’t seem to drink enough water, take a look at why coconut water may be your next best option.
It’s Nutrient Rich
Coconut water, just like the meat of the coconut, is rich in various nutrients. One glass contains Vitamins C and E, protein, magnesium, potassium, fiber, and calcium. Though coconut contains a bit of natural (healthy!) fat, the water has very little in the way of fat content. It’s also over 90 percent water, which means you’re getting the hydration, but with a kick of flavor and some extra nutrients.
It Boosts Multiple Body Systems
Research has shown that coconut water may be beneficial for the heart, blood sugar, the liver, and the kidneys. It has helped diabetics with maintaining blood sugar levels, reduced kidney stones for others, and improved heart health for those suffering from various heart issues and diseases. Is it a cure-all? No. But it definitely brings a boost to health on a continual basis.
It’s Delicious
Some people are less than enthused about the flavor of coconut water. It has a sweet, yet slightly bitter taste. For many, the taste is acquired, and they find that they appreciate it more over time. Others really enjoy the flavor and take to it immediately. The only way to really know is to give it a try. But if you’re just looking for something with flavor (that’s not soda or juice!), coconut water is a great option.
Staying hydrated is crucial for long-term health and wellness. You can't live without H2O, and when you don't get enough, your health will definiteiy suffer. Water is definitely your best option, but if you can’t make the switch or just need some flavor, coconut water is a good compromise. Give it a try, give it a little time, and enjoy the taste and healthy benefits of proper hydration.
