Simple Tips for Healthy Eating

By Genevieve Cunningham

Eating a healthy diet is definitely important. What goes into our mouths has a huge impact on the way that we feel and the way that our bodies function. Unfortunately, most of us don't have the healthiest of menus. It can be tough to change habits. And it can be especially tough to relearn shopping, cooking, and meal planning. Luckily, altering your diet toward healthy eating doesn't have to be as difficult as most people make it. Start small. If you would like to turn your eating habits around for good, take a look at these simple habits that you can start changing today.

Use the Palm of Your Hand

This doesn't mean eat with your hands! It's actually a great way to measure your portions. When you're reaching for your main dish and each side, try not to get a helping bigger than the palm of your hand. You don't have to put it in your hand to measure, but can instead just eye the amount. You may be surprised to find that this technique helps lower your total caloric intake and keeps your portions under control with very little extra effort.

Stick to One Helping

Don't go back for seconds. Sometimes this may be easier said than done, especially when you have an especially delicious meal in front of you. But the truth is that most second helpings are consumed out of habit rather than need. Practice saying no. Get your stomach and mind used to stopping after the first serving. Once you master this habit, saying no to more food will become easier over time.

Avoid the Snack Table

Many people put out a snack table or bar before major meals. It might contain things like crackers, pickles, olives, cheese, or various veggies. If you're going toward healthy eating, it's probably best to steer clear of this table. The constant picking at of these small foods may not seem like much, but their calories really add up. Stay away from the temptation and it'll be easier to stay healthy in the long run.

Healthy eating can be either difficult or easy … it all depends on your approach. If you would like to make the transition to healthy eating as easy as possible, use these tips to get moving in the right direction. With a little practice, persistence, and patience, you can turn your eating habits around and get in the best shape and health of your life.
