4 Ways to Find Focus in This Moment

By Genevieve Cunningham

There's no worse feeling than being completely unable to concentrate. You might be in a meeting or pushing a deadline, but you just can't get it done. You can't think about the task before you. Your mind wanders. This feeling can create a lot of stress. But luckily, it's not a feeling that has to last. If you need to find focus right now, take a look at these four methods for getting back on track.

Get Up and Move

Don't sit and try to force yourself to pay attention. It won't work. Instead, get up and move. Moving your body can alter your energy and your ability to pay attention. Remove yourself from your working area and go for a walk. Do some yoga. Spend 15 minutes getting in some movement. Once you start to feel your brain relax and recharge, go back and try to work again.

Change the Scenery

Sometimes all you really need is a change of scenery. Pick up your laptop and head to the library. Or go to your home office. Or find a nice park bench at your local park. Changing scenery can completely alter your mental state, which means concentration may come easier once you're in a new spot.

Get a Snack

If you're hungry or lacking in a particular nutrient, your concentration won't come back no matter what you do. Try grabbing a quick and healthy snack. Pick a vegetable or a piece of fruit if you need energy. Eat your snack away from your desk, and once your dietary needs are met, head back to the office and see if your focus has improved.

Quick Meditation

Never underestimate the power of a few quiet minutes. Turn off your screen, dim the lights, and close your eyes in a comfortable location. Then count slow deep breaths in your head. As you count, release any worries or thoughts about work. Just be in the moment. This takes practice, but if you can master it, you have one of the most effective methods for improving your focus in a pinch.

If your focus is lacking, there are things you can do to get it back. You don't have to suffer. Use these tips to gain your concentration back as quickly as possible so that you can improve your productivity and find a little more success in daily life.
