Can Walking Really Be Enough Exercise?
By Genevieve Cunningham
If you're just beginning a new exercise journey, you may have heard some really simple advice. What is it? It's to start walking. Walking for exercise can be a great way to get started, but is it really effective enough to be your only source of exercise? Can you really meet your goals and make significant progress? Or should it be something for newbies only? The answer might surprise you. If you're interested in focusing on exercise in your life, take a look at how walking can get you moving down the right path.
Assess Your Goals
There's no doubt that walking is good for overall health. But the only way to determine whether it's the right course of action for you, specifically, is to assess your goals. If your goal is a boost in health, a little weight loss, and improved cardio, then absolutely do some walking. If your goal is to look like a bodybuilder, walking won't be enough. Think about your own goals and what you want from your workout. Once you determine your ultimate goals, you can use a walking workout accordingly.
The Benefits of Walking
For most people, walking is enough to get moving in the right direction. Why? Because it's a very low-impact form of cardio. You'll work your muscles, burn calories, and improve stamina. Your joints may become more flexible. Your lungs may begin to breathe more deeply. Walking is great, and as long as you want these particular benefits in your life, walking is something you can definitely enjoy completely stress-free.
It's Easy to Add to Regular Life
Another great thing about walking is that it's really easy to add to your lifestyle. You can start walking around the block after work. You can start skipping the close parking spot and walking from the back. You can walk while your kid is at soccer or baseball practice. You can walk outside with your family. There are so many ways to add it to your regular, daily life. And doing so will absolutely push your health in a better direction from here on out.
If you're not utilizing walking in your life, it's time to start. It's a great way to get a little exercise in a low-stress, low-impact manner. Pick up walking however you like -- at the park, on your break, with your kids -- and enjoy the better physical and mental health that come with this great habit.
