Satisfying Sleep: Here's How to Achieve It

By Virginia Laird

Sleep is necessary for your overall health and wellness. Even so, there are many who struggle to get the sleep needed to maintain a healthy life. Sleep experts say the majority of those who come in for a visit admit to falling short of the recommended six hours of sleep each night for adults. These professionals advise that the first step to getting the sleep you need is to go to bed at a time that will allow for it. And yet, there are more tips for you to consider when trying to achieve a great night of sleep, including:

  • Stop consuming sugar close to bedtime
  • Have a routine
  • Go to bed when you are tired

Stop Consuming Sugar Close to Bedtime

According to research, consuming sugar too close to bedtime can hamper your ability to fall asleep. Health and wellness experts say that sugar is a stimulant that can prevent the body from having the ability to relax. Many advise that it is best to stop consuming this substance at least three hours prior to bedtime. Keep in mind that this includes any sugar in your food, beverages, etc. Give this a try tonight for a better night of sleep.

Have a Routine

A bedtime routine can be helpful in getting a good night of sleep. Sleep experts encourage those without one to seriously consider adding it immediately. A routine, the same one each night, can help the body relax and the mind clear as you prepare to rest. It is advised that your bedtime routine should last no longer than 20 minutes. It should include only activities that help the body and mind to relax. A few things to consider including in your routine are reading and stretching among others. These professionals also insist that it can take a few weeks of trial and error to determine what is best to include in your routine.

Go to Bed When You Are Tired

Sleep professionals advise every patient who is struggling to get good sleep to begin going to bed when the feeling of exhaustion sets in. Far too many admit to staying up long after the body is ready to sleep. Many do this to finish housework, binge a favorite television show, or complete work. These experts admit that those who work through their body's readiness for bed may experience trouble falling to sleep once they decide to actually hit the pillow. Tonight, when you begin feeling overwhelmingly exhausted, make your way to your bed and settle in for a long sleep.

Make now the time you begin to get the sleep you need.
