Let There Be Better Health at Home

By Tom Herrin

There is much to be concerned about in the world today.  Many have gone from a feeling of confidence to a feeling of almost total insecurity in a matter of weeks.  The new enemy is one that is feared by some, respected by some, and ignored by others.  When so many people have experienced some kind of stay home orders, or suggestions, it has shaken some to the very core of all their stability.  Whether they have been instructed to or not, lots of people have stayed home far more than ever before.  Making the most of the opportunity to be there with family or friends could be the real gem for many in all of this.

Get Reacquainted

For some, it may seem that the time has dragged as they have been virtually cut off from their social groups.  Lots of school-aged children have had to do all of their work online and/or had all of their interactions via some kind of webcast.  They may now long for the chance to actually have those face-to-face meetings that they may have taken for granted.  For parents, it can become a great time to capitalize on this by organizing some kind of socialization as a family.  This could be through playing games, doing crafts, having baking contests, or a variety of other things.  Any of them may provide an environment in which open conversation can take place.

Remember the Importance of Exercise

Many people have tried to get in workouts on a regular basis.  With all of the changes, they may have become discouraged and slacked off.  What better time is there to continue this than now.  Getting the entire family involved in some kind of physical activity can be a winning situation for everyone.  Allowing each member to take turns leading or selecting an activity may be a good way to have them take more ownership.  If this experience is a good one, it may become part of a family tradition that can last from now on.

Have Fun Even in Tough Times

As we do things together, we will likely have stronger ties.  We may be more open and learn to respect one another's ideas and opinions.  As parents, doing a better job of listening may accomplish what nothing else can.  It is no longer time for lectures.  Simply enjoying the company of each member of the group can be fortifying.  These can be the times we will all look back on with both sad and fond memories.
