Low on Energy, Then Take a Walk!
By Stephen R. Farris
Feeling more tired and rundown these days? It could be caused from working long hours on the job, eating unhealthy meals late at night, or not getting enough sleep, or enough daily exercise.
It might be time for a more healthy lifestyle change. Some people go to drastic extremes to change their lifestyle, yet most fail to actually follow through. They become discouraged, or get to the point of reverting back to the lifestyle they had before, which could lead to future health problems.
The key to making a successful lifestyle change is to take it a day at a time. In other words, slow at first, then take a step to the next level. Set goals that can be realistically obtained in order not to get discouraged. Develop a daily exercise routine, maybe a couple of times a week and add more days until you reach at least 150 minutes weekly.
You'll find that by making a few simple changes your energy levels will increase, you'll feel less tired, and more than likely, get better rest at night.
One of the best exercises to begin with is walking. The good thing about walking is you can do it in the comfort of your home on a treadmill (if you have one), in your neighborhood, in a mall (although they seem to be disappearing), or at the park -- probably your best bet.
So you might be asking, what are the benefits of walking? I do that by going from my car to the door at home and work. Glad you asked, so let's take a look.
- Counteracts the effects of the weight-promoting gene
- It helps reduce your sweets craving
- It reduces the risk of developing breast cancer
- Easy on the joints
- Boosts your immune system
While you're walking, you can also practice good breathing technique and increase your endurance so don't be surprised if at some point you'll feel like you could walk forever.
As always, talk with your primary care physician or local chiropractor and let them know how you're feeling and find out if you're healthy enough to begin an exercise routine, whether it's walking, jogging, swimming, or other types of aerobic exercise. He/she may offer a few tips and suggestions to get you started. Now you can start your road to a vibrant, healthy, and more active lifestyle for a healthier you!
