3 Healthy Habits You Need During Flu Season

By Virginia Laird

There is no time to waste when it comes to forming healthy habits. This is especially true as flu season approaches. With thousands who fall ill with the disease annually, it is best that you start now finding ways to pump up your immune system to prepare for the flu takeover. A few tips the experts have suggested to help you prevent the flu from creeping into your home include:

  • Wash your hands often
  • Go to bed
  • Never skip a meal

Wash Your Hands Often

Handwashing is vital in the fight against the flu. All too often there are some who choose to skip this necessary step. According to research, if you are washing your hands fewer than seven times each day, you are short-changing your own health. It is necessary that you practice proper handwashing hygiene after coming into contact with others, visiting the restroom, and before handling your food, among other times. Making sure you are washing your hands often can help prevent ingesting the flu germs, as well as other germs that may be traveling around. Start today teaching your children proper handwashing techniques to help prevent the spread of the flu.

Go to Bed

While you may feel like you are old enough to skip out on a bedtime, going to bed at the same time each night can be helpful in promoting good overall health. Experts admit that getting plenty of sleep is one of the best ways to help prevent illness and boost your immune system. The average adult should try to get at least six hours of sleep each night. While this may seem like quite a bit of sleep (for those who prefer to burn the midnight oil), it is actually very little. There are plenty who require much more sleep than this. Instead of skipping out on your sleep, make sure you start going to bed at a time that allows for enough rest each night. This may require you to give yourself a bedtime and stick to it. Whatever it takes to get the sleep you need, it is well worth the trouble as flu season hits.

Never Skip a Meal

While you think you may be doing yourself a favor skipping a meal to help you control your weight or promote your health, it is actually doing something different. Skipping a meal can hamper your immune system, as well as your metabolism. If you want to stay healthy throughout the flu season, it is best to provide your body with the nutrition it needs to stay well. This requires you to not skip meals. Instead, make sure you are eating well-balanced meals throughout the day. Start today making each meal a priority.

Take control of your health and start doing what is necessary to try preventing the flu from taking over your home right away.
