How Vitamins Can Boost Your Overall Health

By Sabine Dorothy Docteur

It is no question that billions of dollars are spent every year on medication to treat various diseases. Vitamins can act as a supplement to help improve health in addition to the prescribed medications that individuals take every day. Our bodies make a great number of vitamins through different natural processes. There are 13 vitamins that our bodies undeniably need to function. With a healthy and well-balanced diet, most individuals do not need vitamin supplementation. When there is a lack of any of these vitamins through problems with absorption or any of our body processes, it can have an effect on our energy, productivity, and overall quality of life. There is hope! Most of these vitamins have been manufactured from nature to act as a supplement for the ones we may be missing, or ones that we may not be consuming instinctively based on our diets.

Where Vitamins Come In

Although vitamin supplementation should not replace healthy eating, it has great usefulness and can benefit those with a variety of health conditions. For individuals who are suffering from malabsorption disorders, taking vitamins is vital to upkeep their health. Vitamins can help boost your immune system and this is wonderful for those who may have low immunity due to a certain condition. Furthermore, since prevention is key, one might say that the more immunity the better; therefore, even if there is no specific condition affecting immunity, vitamins are still right for you to take. Vitamin supplements have other vital roles as well, such as improving bone health, increase energy, improve skin healing, and decrease symptoms of depression. The most important thing is to find the one that is the best fit for you and your lifestyle.

Too Much of a Good Thing

We should always take precautions and not too take too much of a certain vitamin. Toxicity and overdosing still remain very real issues. Thus, as I always tell myself, it is better not to go overboard. Taking a large number of vitamins could prove to be harmful to your body. Unless, you are diagnosed with a certain disorder and told to take supplements to replace the vitamins that you are missing, be sure to watch your supplementation. It is essential to pay attention to the warning labels because they should tell you the proper dose for your particular situation. One major thing to consider, above it all, is that some vitamins may cause unwanted and even dangerous side effects. The body only needs a tiny bit of vitamins at a time, since it makes its own. So, when in doubt, less is more, in this case.

There are a number of ways that we can grab the vitamins that our bodies need to function at its best. These include through our body's processes of producing and extracting vitamins from our foods. In the certain instances, we may need vitamin supplementation to get that extra boost. Be smart about the type and number of vitamins that you take and enjoy that addition to your healthy living.
