Inactivity Can Quickly Impact Your Health

By Sandy Schroeder

What would happen if you were completely inactive for two weeks? Researchers say you would not like the impact on your health, according to doctors Mehmeh Oz and Mike Roizen.

Looking at What Happens

Researchers tracked a group of 30-year-old men and women who regularly walked 10,000 steps daily. They asked them to be completely inactive for 14 days. In that brief amount of time the participants experienced decreased cardiovascular functioning, insulin sensitivity and cardiorespiratory fitness. They also added fat to the body and the liver and increased the size of their waists.

Fortunately, the downturn was not permanent. The participants were able to regain original fitness levels within two weeks by returning to their normal workout schedules.

What happens if you run into an extended period of inactivity? That's a question that we all need to pay attention to.  If surgery, injuries, extended illness, or cold weather keep you from being active, it's important to start an indoor exercise routine with a treadmill or stationary bike, get back to the gym, or start available community exercise classes.

The longer you wait the harder the rebound back to health and fitness can be, but chiropractic support may help you get a grip and get going again.
