Desk Jockey? Here's How to Minimize Back Pain

By Genevieve Cunningham

We live in a world of excessive sitting. Our lives are no longer set up in a way that requires much in the way of movement. We drive to get where we need to go, sit for entertainment of all kinds, and many of us even sit all day at work. If this sounds like you, it’s likely that your health is actually suffering due to all the sitting -- even if you don’t realize it yet. Seriously, back pain, anyone? But what can we do? Luckily, there may be little ways to improve our health and fight the negative effects of sitting, and one of the best places to do this is the place where we spend almost all of our time: work! If you’re a bit of a desk jockey who would like to get their health under control, take a look at these tips to use at the office.

Exercise Good Posture Habits

Good posture is critical for eliminating back pain. Too much slouching or slumping forward is almost certainly going to cause discomfort in the spine. Our bodies weren’t meant to remain in this position, and when we force it to do this, we’re fighting against nature. At work, you may notice that your posture starts out fairly well and then deteriorates throughout the day. To improve posture, try these tips: set reminders at your desk or on your phone, keep your desk chair in a supportive position, and perform posture specific exercises. It will take some work and patience, but over time your posture will improve and the pain is likely to significantly reduce.

Increase Your Movement Time

We can’t always control how often we get up and move about at work. Sometimes, we’re almost chained to our desks, and there’s little we can do to change that for the day. But anytime that you have a little leeway in movement, take advantage of it. At break time, get up and move! At lunch, take a walk around the building or walk to a nearby cafe. The more you’re able to get out from behind the desk and move the body, the less pain and stiffness that you’ll feel in the back … or in the body as a whole.

Take Trips to the Chiropractor

It doesn’t take a lot of care to notice a difference … it just takes regular care. If you want to keep your back healthy, make sure that you’re getting regular chiropractic care. Chiropractors may be able to remove restrictions from the vertebrae of the spine, thus eliminating pain and improving mobility. This can help negate the negative side effects that often come from sitting for excessive amounts of time. It’s one of the best and most effective ways to keep your back -- and whole body -- healthy and strong for a lifetime.
