Growing Pain Relief Through Chiropractic Care
By Stephen R. Farris
Remember back when you were growing up and you felt a twinge or uncomfortable feeling in your joints? Maybe the pain was in your knees, elbows, or even your shoulders. Your parents probably told you that you were going through "growing pains."
What does that even mean? Seriously, that's probably what we all thought at the time. What the heck are our parents talking about? Supposedly it was thought that the pain we were feeling was due to our joints and limbs undergoing the natural process of growing.
Usually the pain is associated with children under the age of 12, and is normally felt in muscles, bones, tendons, ligaments, or nerves. Most likely, the pain goes away or lessens by the time the child is a teenager.
There are two areas growing pains usually occur, the legs and sometimes the arms. What's a little weird about it is the fact the pain happens with a type of consistency.
- In late afternoon
- While asleep
- After intense activity
It can happen daily, a few times a week, but between those times when it flares up, the pain usually disappears. Most often the discomfort feels more painful in some and less in others. It's described as being:
- A deep pain
- Aching
- Throbbing
- Cramping
Growing pains seem to happen more in the shins, calves, behind the knee, and/or in the thighs. Research is not totally sure what causes the onset of growing pains, but in one study, they found that it usually happens more often in children who have low levels of Vitamin D.
