Preventing Back Pain While Road Tripping

By Virginia Laird

Some of my greatest memories are from road trips taken with friends during spring break. With this time of year quickly approaching, there are millions planning a variety of trips to make the most of their spring break. While the trips can be adventurous and exciting, it can also cause some pain through the back. Chiropractors admit that traveling can be strenuous, causing tension to build in the spine and lead to back pain. However, these chiropractors have offered a few tips to try to help prevent such pain from putting a damper on your entire spring break, including:

  • Stop and stretch often
  • Use good posture while traveling
  • Pack light

Stop and Stretch Often

Although you may be in a hurry to get where you are going, there is no benefit (or need) to rush. Chiropractors suggest that allowing time to stop and get out of the car can be helpful in preventing back pain. It is recommended that you plan a stop every couple of hours. During these breaks you should plan to get out of the car, walk through a store, and stretch lightly. Although it will take you slightly longer to arrive at your destination, following this advice can keep your back pain under wraps.

Use Good Posture While Traveling

Chiropractors suggest that using good posture is not only a great way to prevent back pain, but is also a great habit. It is suggested that you sit with both feet flat on the floor to invite good posture and reduce the chances of pain while you travel. Chiropractors also admit that taking a good look at your shoulder position can help get rid of pain. Research indicates that all too often many choose to hunch over rather than sitting properly. To correct such posture, chiropractors suggest that when you notice improper posture that you stretch your back and then correct it right going forward.

Pack Light

Although you will not need to carry your luggage through an airport, packing light is still an essential aspect of traveling. Chiropractors advise that packing light can keep a heavy load off of your spine, which can help prevent back pain. If you are one who packs a lot, chiropractors suggest that you pack in two smaller bags rather than one large (heavy) bag.

For those who are serious about keeping away back pain, it is suggested that you consider making routine chiropractic care part of your healthcare regimen.
