A Smile May Help You Live Longer
By Tom Herrin
When thinking about the things that may be helpful in improving health, most people likely have a first thought about things such as diet, exercise, and lifestyle habits in general. Facial expression may possibly be the very last item on a list of concerns. Believe it or not, smiling can actually have a considerable impact on overall health. There seems to be natural ties between this physical action and the emotional well-being that is so vitally important for all of us. It may well be case of establishing a standard that the body works toward.
It May Lessen Pain
Smiling is not just an action but also something that can serve as a sort of controller for some of the body’s less obvious functions. Smiling can cause the body to release endorphins that not only serve as a mood booster but also a natural painkiller. This can be an effective way to reduce, or dull, pain and give the body a lift. Anytime people have a brighter outlook, their lives will seem better.
It Can Make People More Attractive
There are very few people who seek out someone who doesn’t smile. Smiles are considered contagious, and those who do so naturally increase their appeal to others. They seem more approachable and more welcoming. Those who come in contact with them may feel there is a greater degree of trust and acceptance. Studies have indicated that women who smile are much more likely to appear inviting to men than simply making eye contact. One study showed that people who seem to be happier can expect to have longer lasting relationships with others.
Longevity Is A Net Result
Even if you don’t feel like smiling, it has been shown that a fake smile is better than none. It may be a kind of “fake it ‘til you make it” action. Smiling can help your body to relax and improve your reaction to potential health problems. It can help relieve stress and keep the heart working more efficiently. All of these things may combine to serve as reason for the increased longevity -- an average of seven years -- that has been found in studies. What do you have to lose? Smile more and live longer, look younger, and increase your circle of friends. All of this is at no cost.
