Whether It Be Fruit or Vegetable, Eat Tomatoes

By Tom Herrin

People have all kinds of tastes for food.  Some really feel that certain things are a must on their menu.  Some can't eat a meal without those things as part of it.  For a lot of people, it is some kind of bread.  There are plenty of garlic lovers around.   For others, it may be some vegetable or fruit that they feel adds the flavor they enjoy in almost every dish.  A tomato is a food that seems to fall somewhere between a fruit and a vegetable, depending on who is being asked.  They are a versatile food that can be taken all kinds of directions in the ways they are used.  They can also do some good things for health.

They Have a Decent Supply of Antioxidants

They are known to contain lycopene which is believed to deal effectively with cancer-causing free radicals.  It is thought to be effective in fighting prostate cancer that is so common in men, particularly as they age.  It is also believed to work against cancers of the mouth, cervix, esophagus, rectum, breast, and a few others.  Tomatoes are one of those foods in which the benefits can even be retained after having been cooked in some form such as ketchup.

They May Help with Blood Pressure

There is some reason to believe that eating tomatoes daily may play a part in reducing blood pressure.  This is largely due to the potassium in them.  This can reduce the pressure on the walls of the blood vessels which, in turn, can mean less stress on the heart.  Including them in a diet may be a small price to pay for better blood pressure, particularly for those who seem to have problems in that area.

They Can Add A Unique Flavor to Meals

When tomatoes are added to a meal, there is a distinct flavor present.  They seem to always be able to accent a dish.  We like them in soups or beans.  They are always welcome on sandwiches or hamburgers.  Some people have them on hot dogs.  They seem to have a good place with a lot of meat dishes.  Of course, there are those who can eat them raw at just about any time.  However you like them, have one every day for your health.
