Chiropractic Care Is an Option for Osteoarthritis

By Amy Silva

If you have joint pain due to osteoarthritis and think you've tried everything to get relief, you're not alone. Many people suffer through the pain because they don't think anything will help. People may try different medications, including over the counter and prescriptions, to no avail. Others might try a holistic approach. Chiropractic isn't always utilized by those with osteoarthritis because they aren't aware it's an option, but it may be just what they need to lessen their pain.

Causes of Osteoarthritis

There are many risk factors that may lead to developing osteoarthritis including being overweight or obese, heredity, aging, and injuries to joints or weak muscles, among others. One might develop pain in the hips, knees, fingers or toes that is concerning and ends up with a visit to the doctor to find the cause. If osteoarthritis is the diagnosis, know there are options to help with pain, although there is no cure.

Home Treatments for Osteoarthritis

Though they may not be permanent solutions, there are things you can do that may help reduce pain. Osteoarthritis is a degenerative disease, meaning it can progress further as time goes on. Trying non-medical treatments first, such as physical therapy and chiropractic, are often painless and safer than beginning treatments that involve injections and medications. Other options to try include:

  • Staying active - Exercise is good for muscles and bones. It can lessen stiffness and aid in maintaining a healthy weight. If pain makes vigorous exercise difficult, consider low impact workouts such as swimming, yoga, gentle martial arts and walking.
  • Losing excess weight - Extra weight puts more pressure on the joints than the body is comfortable with. This can cause discomfort in the hips, knees and feet joints. Dropping to a healthy weight may help osteoarthritis symptoms, as well as help prevent diabetes and high blood pressure, among other health issues that can occur due to carrying extra weight.
  • Eating a healthy diet - There are foods that can increase inflammation and foods that are anti-inflammatory and help fight joint pain. Healthy foods, such as broccoli, fish and nuts, are always a great choice. Avoiding sugary and fried foods that can cause inflammation is also a good start to reducing pain.

Don't suffer through the joint pain that comes along with osteoarthritis without seeking additional options. Visit your local chiropractors at The Joint for an assessment to see if you can find relief from osteoarthritis with chiropractic care. Many with mild symptoms find that their chiropractor makes a world of difference and their days are more manageable when they aren't so stiff and sore.
