Mental Health Tips That Last a Lifetime

By Genevieve Cunningham

Mental health is definitely an important part of life and self-care. Some people have already received the memo and are putting their mental health first. But others are still lagging in the mental health department. They're not taking it seriously, and it's showing up in the way that they feel every day. They’re sluggish, rundown, depressed, and moody. But you don’t have to be! If you're ready to take your health and life seriously, take a look at these mental health tips that you can start now and continue for a lifetime.

Get Active

Activity is important for all aspects of health, and mental health is definitely no exception. When we're active, we don't have time to worry or fret over trivial matters. We are able to keep our minds busy, which then promotes better mental health. If you're not currently active in your life, it's time to start. Choose a volunteer organization, a sports club, a book club, or get busy with family and friends. Stay involved, and your mental health is much more likely to stay in good condition.

Keep Close Friends

Friends are so important. But here's the thing to keep in mind: Online friends don't count. Sure, you can have real friends that are online. Good friends, even. But they shouldn't be your only friends. You need friends who you can call at a moment's notice and see within a matter of minutes. You need friends who you can meet for lunch. You need friends who you can see in flesh and blood. The better your friends, the better they'll know you, and the more likely they'll be able to help you keep your mental wellness in check.

Keep a Journal

Journals can be incredibly beneficial for mental health. They allow you to get your emotions out in the moment, which is crucial for emotional wellness. Journals can also serve as self-reflection. Go back and read what you wrote. If you see cause for concern, you can immediately reach out for help to keep yourself well.

Mental health matters enough to make a priority. It matters enough to go to a little extra effort for yourself. Use these tips to put your mental health first, and protect yourself and your mind from harm or poor health now and into the future.
