The Common Causes of Back Pain

By Sara Butler

The world is a minefield -- a minefield of things that can lead to lower back pain, that is! Many people think that whenever you experience back pain, something has to happen such as an accident or injury, but the truth is that there are many common things that can lead to back pain. It's these common, everyday experiences that can lead to pain and discomfort in the back, so it's vital to know what they are and how you can avoid them to keep your spine healthy.

Here are a few of the major causes of back pain that the chiropractors at The Joint Chiropractic want you to be aware of.

Sleeping

While your bed may be the place to go to rest and recharge, it can be a place that wreaks havoc on your back if you're not careful.

Sleeping in the wrong position can result in back, which is why you should avoid certain sleeping positions and learn to sleep in others. If you're a stomach sleeper, you should try to move to be a side sleeper or a back sleeper. And when you sleep on your side or your back, you should also place pillows under or between your knees to support your hips and lower back as you slumber.

How do you know if you're not sleeping in the correct position? If you wake up with a stiff neck or back, then you may want to speak to the chiropractor about how your sleeping position may be impacting your spinal health.

Sitting

Do you sit a lot at work only to go home and sit some more? Well, while modern technology has done a lot of things to improve life, all the sitting people tend to do because it most definitely is not a good thing.

Aside from being bad for your overall health, sitting too much is also bad for your spine. People that do a lot of sitting tend to have increased amounts of back pain due to the stress and strain sitting for long periods places on the back.

If you sit a lot, then it's a good idea to talk with the chiropractor about what you can do to help counterbalance all that sitting and keep your spine healthy.

Driving

Another place where people tend to do a lot of sitting is when they drive. Since stand-up cars have yet to be invented, you need to simply be aware of and do what you can to alleviate the stress it places on the spine.

If you have a long commute that has you sitting for an hour or more, then it can lead to back pain. Talk to your chiropractor about how your car's seat and mirrors should be positioned to take the stress and strain off the back.

Back pain is a problem for a lot of people. If it's a problem for you, then talk to the chiropractors at The Joint Chiropractic to help discover why.
