Not Your Ordinary Workout

By Donna Stark

We all know that it’s extremely important to do some type of exercise at least a couple of times a week, right? But what if you are tired of the gym, or bored of the same old routine you have been doing for years? What if you simply lost that loving feeling you used to have for your daily fitness routine? You don't have to spend hours at the gym to improve your health and you definitely shouldn’t hate what you are doing … you may just have to switch things up for a bit!

Take an Exercise Vacation

Take a vacation from "exercise" … but don’t quit exercising! How do you do that, you wonder? Just try something new, maybe try something that is even a little bit quirky, but choose something that will keep you moving toward your fitness goals while taking a break from your ordinary routine. Here are some suggestions for some not-so-typical exercises you can do to get yourself over that hump of boredom.

  • Hydrospinning - If you thought spinning classes were merciless, try cycling underwater for an hour to get a whole new outlook on what a good workout can be, because this is that. It’s just as vigorous as a spin class is, but it has the added resistance of a whole lot of H2O, so be ready to learn how to actually sweat while submerged in water.
  • Aerial yoga - This activity may look a little silly, but it is a seriously tough program of exercise that consists of poses while being suspended from the ceiling by fabric. It’s a total body workout that helps you build core power and improve your strength, balance, flexibility, stability, and endurance.
  • Trampoline class - Why do we let our kids have all the fun? Well, no more … at least not with jumping around on a trampoline. Many trampoline centers are now offering fitness classes for adults and it is definitely a workout. Typically an hour long, they combine plyometrics (jump training), cardio, and strength-building exercises to create a workout that is fun and strenuous.
  • Mud runs - If you like working out and competing with friends, then a mud run is just for you! Sure, you may get a little dirty, but you won’t regret the laughs, the workout, or leaving your friends in the dust while you cruise on past them, hurdling over streams of fire, climbing walls of knotted rope, or swimming in mud under electrified wire. OK, that last part isn’t true, but it’s fun to use your imagination as a way to motivate yourself across the finish line.

Exercise doesn’t always have to be routine, and it’s easy to take a vacation from it without actually stopping. So try something new, give the ordinary a rest, and do something extraordinary!
