A Lemon a Day

My daughter is home for the summer from college and I have to say, I am really proud of the transformation that has taken place while she was at school. Although never unhealthy because she was always an athlete in high school, she has taken her path of overall wellness to a completely new level. She works out and she carries water with her everywhere, but what has really impressed me is her desire to shop for and eat the healthiest of meals every time she sits down at the table. She has done her research and she follows through. So I was curious about her new morning ritual that has replaced her old morning ritual of drinking that first cup of coffee. Now, instead of coffee, she grabs a cup of warm water with lemon, and as you will see, doing so provides the body with several different health benefits.

Lemons Do a Body Good

Sometimes it’s hard to tell what your body needs, but every morning that you wake up, you are given the chance to start fresh, to begin your day with a clean slate. Here are several reasons why drinking a cup of lemon water should be a part of your daily morning routine.

  • Part of your eight - We all know that we have to drink plenty of water throughout the day, but it seems nearly impossible to get the recommended amount of eight glasses in, doesn’t it? So knock one of those glasses of water out by drinking some first thing in the morning! The lemon will make it taste great and you will head out feeling refreshed and hydrated.
  • Appetite wake-up call - Skipping breakfast because you just aren’t feeling it in the morning or are still trying to digest those late-night hot wings? Drinking warm lemon water as soon as you wake up will regulate your digestive tract and have you feeling hungry in no time!
  • Immunity boost - Lemons are packed with high amounts of Vitamin C, which can help your body strengthen its immunity system, which is always a good thing! And if you have children, start building that immunity now before school is back in session and once it starts, send them back with lemons in their water bottles.
  • Energy boost - Move over coffee because your day needs to start with lemon water instead! Lemon juice has been shown to speed up the body’s metabolism, supply instant energy, cleanse the body’s systems, provide amazing hydration, and increase focus so the day ahead can be conquered!

It’s pretty hard to miss the lemon section at the grocery store because their beautiful, bright color stands out from the rest of the fruit. So make it a habit to add a bunch to your cart and start your mornings off right by drinking freshly squeezed lemon water every day!
