Family Fitness: Yes, It's Totally Possible!

By Genevieve Cunningham

Once you have kids, everything becomes all about the family. When you shop, you have to consider the family. When you travel, you have to consider the family. And when you worry over health matters, it's always with your family in mind. But when it comes to health, maybe you don't have to worry quite as much. It may be possible to keep everyone in your family healthy with less stress and effort than you thought. If you're ready to get your entire family moving toward better health on a regular basis, take a look at these tips to help you get started today.

Healthy Habits Start at Home

Habits, whether they are good or bad, are generally learned at home. We learn the simple things such as brushing our teeth and cleaning up after ourselves. And then we also learn the harder things such as maintaining a healthy diet and going in for regular check-ups. If you want your entire family to be healthy, then the entire family should engage in healthy habits. Don't put off doctor and dentist visits. Don't skip basic hygiene lessons with your children. Take the time and effort to teach good habits, and your entire family is more likely to maintain these habits as everyone grows and begins their own lives.

Exercise is a Learned Behavior

Most of the time, exercise and movement are learned behaviors. If you grow up in an environment with very little movement, then you are more likely to resist movement as an adult. If your family spends most of their time in front of the TV, then you can probably expect your children to grow up with similar habits. Do you really want to pass those habits on? Or do you want your children to exercise on a regular basis? If we're talking about health, the answer is obviously yes to more movement! In order to make this happen, everyone in the family needs to exercise now. You can all do your own thing, or you can all exercise together, as long as the exercise happens regularly.

Parents Control the Grocery List

Sometimes as parents we forget that we hold a lot of control. While we can't force our children to do anything, we do have final say on things such as the grocery list. If you want your children to eat healthy, buy healthy foods. Don't fill your cabinets with quick unhealthy snacks, but instead buy plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables and teach everyone in your family how to cook. Though this requires more forethought and more patience on the part of the parents, it definitely pays off in the long run when your children are leading healthy lives

It is absolutely possible for an entire family to be healthy. It can seem like a chore in the beginning, but it doesn't take long for healthy habits to become part of your family culture. Put these goals at the top of your priority list, and you may have a healthier family living healthier lives in no time at all.
