Safe Snacking: Peanut Butter
By Brandi Goodman
You don't need a reason to enjoy peanut butter. Though it should only be eaten in moderation -- just like everything else -- peanut butter is on the list of safe snacking options for anyone without an allergy to it. It offers several health benefits that make it worthwhile, and can be utilized in so many different recipes.
Start By Choosing a Healthier Version
The well-known peanut butter brands you see on store shelves are high in sodium and sugar. The calorie count on this creamy snack is already high enough. Find a healthier version that cuts back on processed ingredients -- or doesn't even use them at all. There are organic peanut butter versions that taste great. At the very least, you should find the sugar-free version of your store brand.
Eat Veggies With Peanut Butter
Fruits are often said to be paired best with peanut butter. They taste great with bananas and apples, after all. However, veggies make a great pairing as well. Many people at least enjoy peanut butter on celery as an afternoon snack. Try it with some others and see which you end up liking.
Try Peanut Butter With Sweet Potatoes
One veggie that needs to be pointed out, in particular, is the sweet potato. A peanut butter, yogurt-stuffed sweet potato makes a very filling and tasty breakfast or dessert. Sweet potatoes have so many antioxidants and beneficial vitamins. Add the protein of both peanut butter and sweet potatoes to the mix and you'll be very full and satisfied with this dish. It's a terrific weight loss treat.
Concoct a Peanut Butter Yogurt Mix for Frozen Grapes
Frozen grapes can help you satisfy your cold food cravings. If you're in the mood for ice cream, concoct a peanut butter yogurt mix to drizzle on them. A low-fat version of Greek yogurt mixed with natural peanut butter and a bit of unsweetened almond milk helps make up the icing. Pour it over the grapes and freeze them for a while for a delicious, cold snack. It's perfect for a hot day.
Peanut butter can help you create a delicious and filling snack. With protein in the mix and healthy fats, you're getting a good dose of nutrients from whatever treat you eat with peanut butter included. Enjoy it when you need to satisfy your sweet tooth.
