Choose Water! Here's Why

By Donna Stark

Does your go-to drink during the day come out of the vending machine? Do you treat yourself to those decadent beverages from that coffee shop across the street? Whether it is a soda, smoothie, or double-foamed latte, consuming too many of those sweet drinks day after day will eventually lead to a lot of health problems that you really don't want to deal with. So, what should you do instead? Well, there is another option.

Why Water Is the Best Beverage to Choose

The next time you are thirsty, don't push the button for that can of soda or stand in line for the daily coffee concoction. Instead, choose water. Since our bodies are primarily made up of water, it is essential to replenish what is lost each day through sweat and normal bodily functions. But that isn't the only reason why you should be grabbing that pure, crystal-clear beverage. Here are some other reasons why water is the best for your body.

  • Maintains a proper balance of fluid in the body
  • Enhances physical and mental performance
  • Boosts energy and increases productivity
  • Aids in weight loss
  • Regulates body temperature
  • Lubricates and cushions your joints
  • Improves blood oxygen circulation
  • Helps fight off illness

Increase Your Water Consumption

If water has never really been your first choice to begin with, you may need some suggestions on how to increase your consumption and actually find some enjoyment while doing so. Here are some simple tips to try at home and at work.

  • Flavor your water by adding slices of cucumber, citrus fruits, watermelon, or mint leaves
  • Add a splash of freshly-squeezed orange juice into a glass of chilled sparkling water
  • Carry an insulated water bottle throughout the day to keep your water chilled
  • Drink tea ... there are countless flavors to choose from (green, white, herbal, and fruit)

Amount to Shoot For

The easiest way to determine how much water you should consume each day is to simply divide your weight in half. The number you come up with is the number of ounces you should be drinking throughout the day. If that number seems overwhelming to you, just start with some baby steps. Shoot for half that amount in the beginning, then add more ounces in the following weeks. You should also keep track of the amount you drink each day so you can stay on top of your consumption. And don't worry! You will be able to reach your goal in no time if you stick with it, avoid the vending machine, and skip your daily run to the coffee shop. Good luck!
