Finished Eating? Grab Your Walking Shoes!

By Donna Stark

There are two things you can do after enjoying a satisfying dinner. You can either plop your body down into a chair or sofa, or you can keep your body moving. Now, we all know how tempting that chair or sofa can be, but the best choice to make is the one that includes easy and light movements. Why is that?

Finished Your Meal? Grab Your Walking Shoes!

There are a lot of reasons why you may want to head outside for a walk around your neighborhood after a meal, but the best ones are what it will do for your overall health and wellness. Take a look at some of the most important perks below.

  • Improves digestion - Walking aids in digestion and can reduce some of the bloating you may experience after meals. It also helps the nutrients from your meal be transported to where they are needed quicker.
  • Improves blood sugar - Similar to digestion, walking can help regulate blood sugar levels. This can help reduce the risk of serious medical issues, such as diabetes and heart disease.
  • Decreases stress - Exercising in general can help reduce stress and walking is no exception. Walking after meals is a great habit to start because it can improve your mood and start relaxing your body for nighttime.
  • Encourages better sleep - Did you know that serotonin is a precursor to melatonin, and that melatonin helps you sleep better? Well, you do now, so head outside for your evening walk!

Starting Your New Habit

The best thing about walking is that you can share the time doing it with your family, friends, or dog. Or if you like having the time alone, it's perfect for listening to your favorite music or podcasts. However you choose to spend the time though, it's important to start on the right foot! Here are some tips that might help.

  • Pace - Don't turn this into an intense workout. A light to moderate pace is all you need.
  • Clothing - Be sure to wear comfortable, reflective clothing. If you don't have reflective clothing, carry a flashlight with you.
  • Shoes - Make sure you are wearing sneakers or walking shoes that offer plenty of support and traction. Avoid wearing open-toed sandals or flip flops.
  • Phone - If you do have a cellphone, bring it along. You never know when an accident may occur.

You Can Eat and Walk for Better Health!

Walking is good for you at any time during the day but it's even better for your body after you finish a meal. So, go ahead and fill up on your favorite foods, but resist the temptation to stay sitting once you are done. Instead, lace up your shoes and get moving!
