Rediscover Your Energy With Smart Choices

By Sandy Schroeder

If every morning is a struggle to get up, and every night is an effort to fall asleep, you may need to rethink everything. When I fall into that routine, I wind up propping up my day with caffeine and collapsing early in the evening. Then when I go to bed it may take another hour to fall asleep.

If you can relate, the Mayo Clinic has some suggestions to help you wake up alert, work all day, and sleep soundly at night. Sound good?  Here's how it works. Think of your body as an energy depot and then concentrate on ways to make the deposits that make it work well.

Eat right - Nourish your body with fresh whole vegetables and fruits. Add fish, poultry and lean meats and choose healthy oils such as olive oil. Add nuts, whole grains, and low fat dairy. Avoid processed food and fast foods and sit down to family dinners as often as you can.

Get 7 to 9 hours a sleep each night - Set a regular bedtime and keep it even on the weekends. Create a sublime retreat in your bedroom and shutdown electronics at least two hours before bedtime. Also develop a sleep ritual with a warm bath, soft music or a simple snack

Develop a close circle of friends and relatives - Stay in touch with your neighbors, colleagues, friends and family. Use coffees, lunches, dinners and weekend breakfasts or brunches to catch up.

Maintain a daily exercise routine - Find a way to exercise at least 30 minutes a day and pick a routine that you enjoy. Pick a time that fits your schedule and enlist a workout buddy to keep you on target.

Avoid news overdoses - Stay informed but know when to opt out to avoid burnout. Turn the TV off and just pick programming that you really want to see.

Reach out to help others - Make time to help your local library, hospital or senior care facility and take your kids with to help out at the local animal or marine shelter.

Pinpoint stress and work to reduce it - Find ways to let go of tension with daily walks, meditation or deep breathing. Use music, poetry, art or crafts to refresh your mind and let go of your worries.

Get outside every day - Go for walks, work in your garden or just sit on your patio and read. Sunshine and breezes have a way of making everything better.

If these suggestions work for you, keep looking for more ways to balance your life.
