You May Meditate While Working With Your Hands
By Tom Herrin
Just about everyone spends some time in a whirlwind of activities at certain times. It seems to be the nature of modern society. There are plenty of worries and plenty of deadlines. The abundance of electronic devices that are designed to make things easier can actually contribute to intensify the stress. Many people seem attached to their devices and can never really get away from them as they provide constant access to some of the things from which they need to escape. Resorting to age-old forms of relaxation activities is not so out of style. Working with the hands can still provide a meaningful way to be productive while getting away from the grind.
It Can Create Its Own Space
When people work with their hands, a different kind of concentration is required. The intricate relationship between the working hands, the seeing eyes, and the imagining brain can be pretty consuming. Outside distractions may be soon forgotten as people focus on the given project. This kind of separation can be similar to meditation as it becomes more involved. There may be great mental and physical relief from tension as this develops. This also helps to serve as a natural protection from depression.
It May Keep People Younger
There is some belief that when people are able to create things with their hands, their minds are invigorated. The creative activity in the brain can help avoid many of the problems associated with aging. In addition to this, the feeling of accomplishment associated with the completed project can bring joy and pleasure. Even better may be the great feeling achieved when others admire the finished product. It may strengthen their social bonds as well. Sharing one another’s finished products may enrich everyone as they do for each other.
Find Your Own Place
Considering taking up some kind of activity in which you can work with your hands does not require that much knowledge or experience. There are plenty of things available. There is quilting, leatherworking, gardening, and much more. All it takes is looking around at a craft store or magazine. Learn a little about what is involved and how it can work for you. In no time, you may find yourself participating in something you never dreamed you might do -- and enjoying it.
