How to Help Your Kids Get More Sleep
By Genevieve Cunningham
If there's one thing that we know about kids, it's that they need plenty of sleep. If you've ever dealt with a sleep deprived toddler, then you know this statement all too well. Kids who aren't getting good sleep are monsters. But even though we're armed with this knowledge, kids everywhere are still suffering from a serious lack of sleep. And it's causing serious problems in their overall well-being. If you're trying to get your kids on track for better health, take a look at these tips for getting them the sleep they need every single night.
Research Their Needs
Kids need different amounts of sleep based on their age. Look up the current recommendations and do the math. Are your kids getting enough? Do you think they need more or less? Determining the right amount of sleep is the first step in getting your kids quality sleep that ultimately improves their overall health.
Plan Bedtimes and Routines
Once you know how much each child needs, it's time to set bedtimes. Set an appropriate bedtime for each child, and stick with it. About an hour or half-hour before bed, help them complete a routine. It might consist of a bath, a book, and some tea. Or if they're older, the routine might look a little different. The more consistent you are with bedtimes and routines, the easier it is for your kids to fall asleep and stay that way.
Do It As a Family
Don't try to make one child change their habits without everyone else. Sure, some kids might have an earlier bedtime, but they should know they're not alone in the process. They'll feel deprived and singled out. Just make better sleep a family goal -- mom and dad included. Doing it together provides built in moral support. And as a bonus, everyone will likely see their health improve. It can't hurt to get a little more sleep, so make this a family project for a total family transformation.
Chances are good that your kids need more sleep. But chances are good that you do too! Sleep is crucial for healthy development, sound decision making, and long-term happiness. Use these tips to get sleep moving in the right direction, and you can all enjoy better rest and better health for years to come.
